How Tidal and hydro power works

Both tidal and hydro power rely on the kinetic and potential energy of water, but tidal power harnesses the energy from ocean tides while hydro power typically harnesses energy from river flows and elevation differences.

Tidal power

Imagine underwater wind turbines! These capture the energy of ocean tides, pulled by the moon, generating clean electricity.

Hydropower

Dams harness the power of water flowing downhill to spin turbines and create electricity.

While large-scale hydropower isn’t feasible on Anglesey due to its flatness and relative lack of powerful rivers, there is strong potential for harnessing tidal power around the island’s coast.

Initiatives like Morlais are leading the way, using underwater turbines to generate clean energy for thousands of homes and innovating with new designs. Tidal power offers a clean and sustainable energy source, as predictable and reliable as the tide itself!
