The Earth's core is very hot. Imagine drilling very deep wells and pumping water down into the hot underground rocks. The heat can only be felt at very significant depths, although how deep varies across the globe.
This water turns to steam, rushes back to the surface, and spins a turbine to generate electricity – just like a traditional power plant, but using the Earth's heat instead of burning fuels.
It comes from the Earth itself, so it's like a battery which will never run out (at least not for millions of years!)
Geothermal energy doesn’t depend on wind or sun fluctuations, and is available all year long.
Geothermal power is more environmentally friendly than the use of fossil fuels and its carbon footprint is low.
